scSTREAMS enumerates NTFS alternate data streams

Softcorp scSTREAMS is a Win32 command that quickly searches your NTFS hard disk, enumerates the hidden NTFS alternate data streams, and reports the disk space they occupy.

You have hidden data lurking in your computer

If you run Windows NT, 2000, XP, or 2003 Server, and use the NTFS file system, then you have hidden data lurking in your computer in NTFS alternate data streams.

NTFS, the New Technology File System, supports a feature called "alternate data streams" in any file or directory on the volume. Like the primary sequence of bytes that we think of when we think of a file, the alternate data streams hold a sequence of bytes, called a stream. But unlike the primary data stream, Windows Explorer and the DIR command do not report the existence of the alternate data streams nor the disk space they occupy.

Legitimate uses of NTFS alternate data streams

NTFS alternate data streams are used for various legitimate purposes:

  • Extended attributes (title, subject, author, category, keywords, comments, etc. that appear on the Summary tab of the Properties dialog).
  • Thumbnails of image files (created by the Windows Indexing Service).
  • MacOS files that require multiple streams per file (called "forks").

Unique security issues with NTFS alternate data streams

NTFS alternate data streams are an excellent place to put data that you don't want to see. They are also a great place for others to hide data they don't want you to see. It is a great place to hide any sort of malware including a virus, trojan, worm or spyware. scSTREAMS gives you visibility to this hidden data.
